CELEST scientific symposium held at the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS): October 12, 2007

On Friday, October 12, 2007 an 90-minute CELEST scientific symposium session entitled "Frontiers in neuroscience: How does a brain give rise to mind?" was held at the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in Kansas City MO ( http://www.sacnas.org/confNew/confClient/ ). The SACNAS conference drew approximately 1900 participants, of which about 1000 were students, the rest being postdocs, faculty, or other professionals. The CELEST symposium session featured talks by four CELEST-affiliated scientists from Boston University and MIT and attracted approximately 80 attendees, almost all of them students. (The symposium presentation information is shown below.) The talks were well-received and after the session several students approached presenters at the CELEST symposium to learn more. More than 40 additional CELEST brochures were distributed at the conference poster sessions, student/faculty dinners, and at the Boston University Recruiting Table. Interested students ranged from those with a biology/neuroscience background to psychology students, engineering students, and those with mathematics majors or minors. Three female undergraduates (two math majors and one chemistry major) have since emailed one of the CELEST symposium speakers and stated that they will be applying to Boston University for doctoral studies in neuroscience as a result of their CELEST interactions at SACNAS.
